[Live Review + Photography] Best Coast – Live in Hong Kong

I didn’t know Best Coast until 2012 when I heard their Boyfriend at a Cafe in Williamsburg. Overlooking the East River and the skyline of Manhattan, the song was the best soundcheck for the sunny afternoon.

After a year, I finally saw them live at the Riot Fest Chicago in September 2013. The performance was, as expected, another great chilling session under the sun in the breezy air.

Who would have known last night in Hong Kong, I would get the chance to see Best Coast for the second time. The show was held at Hangout, a small but decent venue in town. I was surprised to hear the mix here was actually better than some of the big venues’.

Kicking off the show were Fantastic Day, a 5-piece indie band from Hong Kong, and they played 7 songs before the Best Coast‘s set.It was kind of a mix of Britpop-influenced beat merged with pop tunes. The overall response was quite well as a local band. I would give a credit to whoever created the visual behind. Very vibrant and eye-catching. Commercially, it was clever to put the band’s name on the images as most people would forget (or would never know) the name of the opening act. So at least, after last night, you know there’s a local band called Fantastic Day.

So where are everybody’s Best Coast? Yay they finally came out at 9:30pm! Not a bad wait at all! Bethany Cosentino sounded amazing in live. I even prefer her live vocal than how she sounds in the records. Despite the room was dark and the lighting system was a bit sketchy, you could see the sunshine from this California girl who was standing at the centre of the stage. Sweeping on the strings, swaying the guitar and even making a short speech to thank their fans in Hong Kong – all the moves were so unpretentious. Bobb Bruno remained quite silent throughout the gig as a devoted guitarist acting as the backbone for the band. The intensely guitar-striking style increased the heat in the tiny venue. The front crowd was singing, dancing and swinging their hips. Certainly you could tell people were having so much fun. One highlight was Cosentino told the crowd her birthday was coming and some fans immediately gave her a birthday song as present. The 21-song set was ended perfectly with their hit Boyfriend.

I’d recommend fans of Vivian Girls, She & Him, Dum Dum Girls and the red hot new band Haim. Having said that Best Coast is the most “lo-fi” amongst all these names. This duo won’t let you down if you want to chill out at night under the California sunshine.
