HEAD PHONES PRESIDENT had their first gig in Hong Kong on 19 December. This Japanese metal band had shared the same stage with metal gods like Slipknot and A7X before. So you could imagine their music is more like popular metal stuff you can find in HMV. For whoever hasn’t seen their live, you will be surprised by the energy brought by the tiny female vocalist Anza Ohyama.

Dressing in gothic-maid-style dress, it’s hard to tell if Anza is just another cute J-pop singer. However, at the moment her blasting voice exploded out from the mix, your mind would be blown away. To be frank she’s not the best metal female vocalist I’ve seen, however it’s her stage movement that grip my heart. She bounced, crawled and headbanged like there’s some kind of spirit driving her from the inside. Her mimicking in certain songs made her look like a dark fairy and that softened the overall atmosphere. Yes it did make the set look “weaker”, but to me that’s how they can differentiate themselves from other Western / male-fronted metal bands.

One thing to criticize is, which is commonly seen in J-rock / Japanese pop cultural in general, the act is too close to perfection. They always know and have everything you look for. On the contrary, what I’m looking for is a little more of chaos and brutalness.
