The Colorado trash rockers Havok had their first-ever gig at Hidden Agenda Hong Kong on 18 January. People in Metallica, Motorhead or other metal band t-shirts arrived so on time for the show which is kind of rare. Besides the metal kids, this show had attracted the older generation of metalheads. I guess it has to be due with the first explosion of trash metal in the early 90’s when these people were teens so they wanted to taste it again in 2014. Thanks to this group of people, they helped stirring the crowd by injecting so much energy into the pit and showed the younger generation of what a real pit / crowd-surfing was like.

This show gave me an interesting insight. I have to admit I’m part of the “younger generation” of trash metal listener so all the trash metal acts I have seen in my life are Slayer, Metallica, Anthrax and Megadeth – in a stadium scale – which is more like an entertainment performance filled with fire effects and stage props. That’s not how metal was originated from. And so, when I saw Havok, I got the sense of freshness. They kind of ignited my love and memory for trash metal again. And I believe it’s many people’s feeling too.

As always, I prefer more intimate gigs than stadium shows because it’s easier to tell if a musician is good or not without any supporting elements on stage but judging purely from their live skills. The barrier between the stage and the audience was so thin that I can see the flame in their eyes. And that gripped my heart and probably anybody’s who were there.

Quoted from David Sanchez the vocalist “You never know if you could live till tomorrow. So enjoy this moment. Enjoy this show!”
