[Features] Laibach – They Are Here to Suffocate You

The name “Laibach” may seem unfamiliar to Hong Kong, but they are definitely one of the names you HAVE to know if you’re into industrial rock. Laibach is an industrial metal band, or I should say, a group of multi-disciplinary artists from Slovenia. Laibach had been making music for over 30 years. They are one of the most controversial artists in Slovenia because of their military aesthetics. Some media even called them Nazi supporters because of that, together with their Hilter-style uniforms, short blond hair like a soldier and probably the marching acts in their concerts and videos.

A Laibach Culture Them

After seeing Laibach’s artworks, you won’t be surprised why this band is being banned in many countries and their US working visa was being denied for once in their three-decade- career. There’s a sense of terror in Laibach’s graphical expression. Without knowing the ideas behind, you’d easily perceived the arts as a celebration of Nazism or Fascism. Having said that, art is all about personal interpretation, and I tried not to judge whether it’s politically-correct or not. In fact, Laibach’s art project NSK was about people living in an utopian myth which has no wars, racism and political struggles.

From what I understand from their music and art, I see them as shock artists more than terrorists. What they did was thought-provoking. Imagine back to the 80’s in a communist country, where idea-exchange and open discussion was almost prohibited, Laibach  chose to express their thoughts through shockingly extreme media forms. Even after Slovenia was reformed, Laibach still keep on searching new experiments for their music. Besides original materials, they have covered rock classics like The Rolling Stones’ Sympathy for the Devil andThe Beatles’ Let It Be which is definitely a risky actions for any musicians.

Metal gods Rammstein have acknowledged Laibach as one of their biggest influence. People also frequently referenced Laibach‘s musical contribution in industrial rock, along side with Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson.

Laibach will have their first concert in Hong Kong on 22 March. It would be the only stop in Asia. Don’t miss it!

Stay tuned for review and photos after the show! We’ll bring you the best moment of Laibach in HK!

A Laibach Culture Them

除了原創歌曲,他們亦用了自己獨特的手法重新演譯搖滾經典,像 The Rolling Stones 的 Symthapy For The Devil 和 The Beatles 的 Let It Be,對任何音樂人來說,這絕對是一個冒險的行為。
