Heart-Town Festival may easily be the hottest event in the summer of 2014. As a joint-event with Taichung, the Hong Kong promoter brings the exact headliners to our city for the 3-day programme — Crossfaith (JP), Finch (US), Architects (UK)While She Sleeps (UK)ISSUES (US) and Born of Osiris (US) who unfortunately withdraw in the last minute. The reception towards Heart-Town’s debut is generally positive.

與台中合辦的 <<山海屯音樂節香港站>> (下稱山海屯音樂節) 可能是今夏最熱熾熱的盛事,主辦單位在三天的節目帶來 Crossfaith (日本)、Finch (美國)、Architects (英國)、While She Sleeps (英國)、ISSUES (美國) 和在演出前兩天退出的 Born of Osiris (美國) 。總括來說, <<山海屯音樂節>> 的回響大概都是正面的。

Even though most headliners are originated from the metalcore scene, our top-ranked local participants show a more diverse sound ranging from heavy metal, nu-metal, death metal and pop rock. Here’s what we think of the individual set.

大多數壓軸的國際隊伍均屬 metalcore 類別,相對而言,本地極具名氣的參與者更能展現出樣化的聲音,從 heavy metal、nu-metal、death metal 和 pop rock 都包含在其中。下面是我們對各演出者的評論。

Chapter 1: Crossfaith – The Electronicore Rising Star

Our Asian representative Crossfaith kick off the first headline set with their genre-blending, metalcore-oriented music. Coming back to our city again in two years, the quintet have grown from J-rock local heroes to the first Japanese act to occupy the main stage at Download Festival. Coming out in slim-cut shirts, skinny jeans and leather jackets in the mist of smoke, they blast your ears with “We Are The Future” off their latest release “Apocalypse”, a catchy, synthesizing-beat-driven tune that sounds as fashionable as how they look.

The addition of electronica elements easily get your body moving when the traditional breakdowns and heavy backdrops still keep your head banging. Being part of the trendy movement of putting out metal (or other genres) through the electronica filter, Crossfaith present themselves as entertainers rather than just-another-rockstar; they have shown absolute confidence and perseverance of giving out a flawless entertaining show under the flashing light and blurry smoke. This kind of deliberateness of reaching for perfection is often seen in Japanese arts, which sometimes, is too perfect to be true. Though the set is short, Crossfaith brings you an intense core-party with all of their best works, from The Dream, The Space to Zion EP and the new album Apocalypse.

第1章:Crossfaith — The Electronicore Rising Star

亞洲代表 Crossfaith 以其混合風格、metalcore 作根基的音樂為首日的壓軸演出揭開序幕。相隔兩年樂團重臨我們的城市,他們已在短時間內由大阪當地的獨立英雄蛻變為首支在英國 Download 音樂節主舞台表演的日本團隊。Crossfaith 成員穿上貼身剪裁的襯衫、緊身牛仔褲和皮褸在煙霧中踏上舞台,並以新專輯 Apocalypse 中的 We Are The Future  轟炸你的耳膜;其曲調流暢、充滿合成節拍,聽起來就如他們的裝束一樣充滿時尚感。

歌曲中加添的電子元素很容易讓你身體不自覺舞動起來;保持不變的傳統 breakdown 和背景的沉重音律仍然使你有 headbang 的衝動。作為以電子音樂來過濾金屬 (或其他音樂類型) 新興趨勢的一員,Crossfaith 標榜自己為藝人多於搖滾樂手;他們在現場表現出絕對的信心、展示了在水銀燈光和模糊煙霧下作出毫無誤差的娛樂表演的毅力。這種刻意的完美主義往往出現在日本的文化藝術,有時甚至完美得令人難以至信。雖然演出較短,但當中包括了 Crossfaith 的大碟 The Dream, The Space 、Apocalypse 和 EP Zion 中不同時期的創作,為您帶來了一個緊湊的 core party。

Chapter 2: Finch – Forever Emo, Forever Young

As part of the emo gang in the millennium, Finch broke into mainstream with album What It Is To Burn in 2002, which you probably have quoted the lyrics from in your teenage (secret) journal for a hundred times. 12 years later at their first show in Hong Kong, Finch decided to fill up the set with works from the WIITB golden era featuring all the singalong-tunes. Amongst all the headliners, they seem to fall away from the axis because of their early explosion, softer sound (comparatively) and the slightest influence from the core scene.

Even though the boom period of emo has gone, Finch still scream out every word about adolescent anxiety with desperate emotion as they mean it. Frontman Nate Barcalow restlessly wanders on stage like the hobbledehoy you’d see in the summer Vans Warped Tour back in the days. Whether you admit it or not, you wish you could stay young at heart like Nate does, at least we do.

第2章:Finch — Forever Emo, Forever Young

作為千禧年代 Emo 潮流的參與者,Finch 憑2002年推出的 What It Is To Burn 專輯進佔主流樂壇,而你亦可能曾經在中學年代的(秘密)網誌引述過裏面的歌詞不下數十次。 12年後在香港的首場演出,Finch 決定從WIITB黃金時代中挑選大部分歌曲,當中不乏燴炙人口的舊作如 Letters To You 和 Post Script 等。無論在組成時期、(相對)柔和的聲音、與 core 音樂的距離,均使他們與其他壓軸表演者有點格格不入。

雖然 Emo 的繁盛時期已經過去,Finch 叫喊著關於青春焦慮和絕望的每個字時仍然感情豐富,就像是剛過去的經歷。主唱 Nate Barcalow 在台上不停徘徊,尤如在夏日 Warped Tour 中碰到的那些充滿煩惱的年青人。不管你承認與否,你也希望像 Nate 那樣保持心境年輕吧!

Chapter 3: Architects – Lost Together

Coming down to Day 2, the focus shifts to the UK metalcore outbreaks by Architects and While She Sleeps. Landed in our city for the second time like Crossfaith did, and coincidentally toured together in America to support Enter Shikari in 2013, Architects step out with sincere smiles as if they are greeting old friends. We did not attend their first show in Hong Kong but from attendees’ words, it was a great success and the discussion had lingered long after it was ended. Unsurprisingly, the Architects guys know their comeback is going to carry the successive impact to another level.

The signature melodic interludes bridging the verses and chorus is extensively minimized through the amplifiers, while the breakdown and bass drop are strengthened to magnify the live aggression. Sam Carter’s raspy-yelling in the recordings always reveal the suppressed depression and agony towards life matters, even religious unfulfillment, in an one-way inner-scream manner; however when it comes to live performance, the crowd echo to his howling and turns it into a furious dialogue.

第3章:Architects — Lost Together

來到第二天,重點移師到英國 metalcore 界的 Architects 和 While She Sleeps。正如 Crossfaith 一樣,Architects 也是第二次來港,兩個單位不約而同曾為 Enter Shikari 2013年美國巡演同場作暖場嘉賓。Architects 帶著燦爛笑容走上舞台,就像與老朋友相遇一樣。小編沒有參加他們在港的首場演出,但從出席的朋友口中得之,那次表演非常成功,甚至現在仍在討論。不出所料,Architects 深明他們的回歸將把上次縈繞不散的餘音延續。

連接副歌的標誌式結他/鋼琴旋律過場經音響系統處理後緩和不少,相反曲中的 breakdown 和 drop bass 給加強以逹至更深的現場侵略效果。Sam Carter 的沙啞呼叫在錄音室版本處處彰顯著對人生的鬱悶、煩惱、甚至對宗教的不滿,整體感覺如單向的內心吶喊;然而在現場表演中,觀眾對他呼喊互相呼應,把它變成了一段段狂怒的對話。

Chapter 4: While She Sleeps – The Hype of Sleepless Energy

Wrapping up the second day is the Sheffield-based While She Sleeps, who will take you to the burning fire pit with their 60-minute performance full of breathless moments; and we guarantee it will definitely make a mark in your music diary. Scoring a slot at the Main Stage in this year’s Download Festival reflects their uprising status in the contemporary rock circle.

The determination of the tattooed frontman, Loz Taylor, to impress you through a series of outrageous acts is unquestionable. The impassioned screaming with knees down easily strangle all the young girls’ hearts in the crowd (maybe guys’ too.) Loz keeps the ball rolling by falling into the sea of fans, crowd-surfing and needless to say, his signature free-falling jump. Down from a 20 ft-high light stand, Loz Taylor landed safely on stage in a Z-shape during the breakdown. Hell yeah! His peer Aaran Mckenzie tries to gain his cheering by hopping into the crowd. The theatrical melodic guitar, pre-recorded piano,  stereophonic drum layer and the sonorous clean vocal (usually accompanied by crowd’s singalong) present equal dramatic effect in concert as in recordings.

Having only one full-length album released in their career so far and being a relative new band, a vivid live performance is essential to fill up audience’s attention and enrich the overall perception. It’s worth mentioning it is Loz Taylor’s birthday and our Hong Kong fans get to celebrate with him with some birthday song singalong and a giant cake.

第4 While She Sleeps – The Hype of Sleepless Energy

總結第二天表演的是以英國 Sheffield 為基地的 While She Sleeps。他們將為您帶你來60分鐘完全喘不過氣來的表演,保證必會在你的音樂日記留下記號。樂團今年進佔 Download Festival 主舞台,反映了他們在當代搖滾圈的接受程度正在擴展。

主唱 Loz Taylor 決心以一連串瘋狂行為打動你。屈膝慷慨激昂的尖叫輕易抓住年輕女孩觀眾的心 (也許男孩也如此)。Loz 繼續施展渾身解數確保亳無冷場:跳到觀眾席一同和唱、crowd-surfing、更使出指定動作 –從20尺高的燈架自由跳下。Loz Taylor 以Z形雙膝著地,安全降落在舞台上。精彩的一跳啊!他的同伴 Aaran Mckenzie 也不甘示弱,在喝彩聲中帶著低音結他進入樂迷群。冷酷的旋律結他、預先錄製的鋼琴伴奏、立體聲鼓層和高亢的 clean vocal (加上現場觀眾的伴唱),令演唱會發揮與錄音中同等的戲劇效果。

作為一個相對較新、在職業生涯只推出一張 full-length 專輯的樂團來說,生動的現場表演是不可畫缺的,既能填補歌曲選擇的不足,又能豐富整體感觀。 值得一提,演出當日是主唱 Loz Taylor 的生日,主辦即時送上蛋糕,香港觀眾亦一同唱出生日歌為他慶祝。

Chapter 5: ISSUES – Teenage Love and Angst

Georgia newcomers ISSUES also make their debut performance in Hong Kong at Heart-Town Festival. The sunny-looking boys have taken over the final headliner’s place due to the withdrawal of Born of Osiris. They deliver an energetic, profusion set mixing the element of DJ-ing, hip hop,  pop punk and a slight portion of nu-metal on the metalcore base. They give me an impression of recycling the early nu-metal culture with an All Time Low appearance in a metalcore package. This formula seems to be the latest trend in the current music industry (try listening their alike Sylar, My Ticket Home.)

Skyler Acord’s bass-plucking skill and hyperactive expression gains as much attention as the two vocalists do. Some diehard fans bring along boxes of tissues for the band to sign on (because of the T-ISSUES joke.) What a youthful end to a 3-day festival!

第5章: Issues – Teenage Love and Angst

喬治亞州樂團 Issues 在<<山海屯音樂節>> 作出在香港的首次演出。這幾個陽光男孩接替臨時退出的 Born of Osiris 作最後壓軸表演,帶來了充滿活力、色彩繽紛的一小時。他們在 Metalcore 基礎上把 DJ打碟、Hip Hop、Pop Punk 和少部分 Nu-metal 元素混合起來。Issues給小編一個印象 — 早期 Nu-metal 音樂、加上All Time Low 外型及 Metalcore 包裝的文化循環 — 這個公式似乎是當下音樂行業的發展趨勢 (可以試聽與 Issues 同類型的 Sylar My Ticket Home)。

Skyler Acord 的低音結他彈撥技巧和台上亢進的表現也贏得不少注意。一些忠實樂迷帶來盒裝紙巾給樂團簽名(因為 T-ISSUES 的玩笑)。最後為期三天的音樂節就在青春氣氛中結束!

Digression: Below the Stage, Local Power and Withdrawal of Born of Osiris
後話:舞台下、本地力量和 Born of Osiris 的辭演

What happen below the stage interest our team as much as that on stage. The participated bands seem to enjoy embracing by their fans very much. There are countless moments they step down for skin-to-skin, intimate contact with their followers. All the joyful faces full of satisfaction in the sweat-soaked mosh pit prove music is the ultimate source of happiness.

台下所見的絕對與台上的激烈演出同樣有趣。這次參加的樂團似乎很喜歡與歌迷作近距離接觸,因此多次下台跟追隨者互動。在汗水浸濕的 mosh pit 中,不少觀眾臉上都掛著快樂的笑容,再次證明音樂是幸福的來源啊!

Despite all the headliners are international acts, no doubt our local musicians show the unique connection through our own language and share the familiar sensitivity on the touch of cultural and social matters.

儘管所有壓軸都是國際隊伍,毫無疑問本地音樂人通過熟悉的語言和社會文化上的共同觸覺最能帶出地域性的親切感。

Under such high expectation, the sudden cancellation of Born of Osiris’ appearance is like a shot in the head to many metalcore lovers. Anger and chaos are expected to see, though, at this moment, the band has not announced any further explanation about the circumstance.

Putting this aside, Heart-Town Festival has made a pretty successful debut in Hong Kong with its strong preference in metalcore (which seems to be one of the most popular genre in this era) featuring relatively young bands. Let’s see if they can drive the insanity out of you again next year, if any.

在極大的期望下,Born of Osiris 突然退出,相信樂迷必定感到頭部像中彈一樣。在憤怒和混亂下,樂隊直至這一刻還沒有就有關情況作進一步解釋。

除了這個事件,<<山海屯音樂節香港站>> 大致是成功的。主辦似乎較偏好 metalcore  (也可能是因為這是現時最流行的流派) ,參與的也是相對較年輕的樂隊。如果明年再辦,看看他們能否再次帶動你內心的瘋狂吧!
