Happy New year Eve! 2014 has been wonderful! Although this year’s rock show journey has come to an end, the sweat-soaked memory in the mosh pit will last forever! We are so lucky to be part of the amazing live scene in Hong Kong this year and will not forget all the joyful faces we met! Once again, thank you for your support.

除夕快樂! 2014是很精彩的一年!雖然雖然本年度的現場表演已畫上句號,但在mosh pit中充滿汗水的歡樂記憶必會永遠刻在記憶裡!我們很幸運能夠出席不少令人驚喜的現場演出,很深刻與掛著幸福笑臉的樂迷相遇。在此再次感謝所有曾經閱讀我們報導的朋友們。

Bullet for My Valentine – Live in Hong Kong

…Kicking off with 2014 new song Raising Hell, the groovy-looking frontman Matt Tuck stepped out from the dark under the choking beats of the intro. The quartet definitely look fully-charged. Followed by Scream Aim Fire and Betrayal, these straight-forward pure rock and roll tunes emphasis on melodies are always the best adrenaline for the ready-to-rock hot-blooded crowd.

……以2014年新曲 Raising Hell 揭開序幕,作前衛打扮的主唱 Matt Tuck 在歌曲的強勁節拍前奏下從黑暗中走出來。四個成員看上去充滿電似的。緊隨期後有 Scream Aim Fire 和 Betrayal,這些直接而強調旋律的純搖滾音樂對於準備好跳進搖滾世界的熱血年青人是最好的腎上腺素。

Dark Tranquillity – Live in Hong Kong

…The whole concert was like a solo showcase of Mikael Stanne. He remained very active throughout the night. A diehard fan brought a huge Swedish national flag with him / her and successfully passed it to Stanne. He looked THRILLED to receive such a warm welcoming gift in the far East…The set was composed of a diverse mix of songs – new materials like The Science of Noise, older hits Terminus and of course the anthemic Misery’ Crown…owd.

……整場演唱會就像是 Mikael Stanne 的獨立表演。他整晚在台上非常活躍,不斷與到場樂迷交流。有忠實追隨者帶來了巨型的瑞典國旗,而且成功把它遞到 Stanne 的手中。他看了非常興奮!可能是從來沒想過會在地球另一面接受到這樣的歡迎禮物吧…… 這次演出集合了 Dark Tranquillity 不同年期的歌曲 – 像新曲 The Science of Noise,90年代推出的 Terminus,當然還包括代表 Misery’ Crown……

Overseas Features – Immortal Metal – Gwar, Slayer, Mastodon

(English below) ……夜冪低垂,金屬皇者亦即將降臨,Slayer 慢慢步出濃列的煙霧。倒掛在頂篷的巨型十字架陣彷彿把舞台變成一個倒置的墓地。對於很多 Slayer 樂迷來說,這是一個很特別的晚上,因為樂隊將會把 Reign in Blood 全碟演奏。雖然很多人的焦點仍放在創隊成員和結他手 Jeff Hanneman 之死,但觀眾們似乎相當滿意由 Exodus 的 Gary Holt 的替補。時至今日,在現場重溫這1986年的經典專輯給我們一種說不出的懷舊之感。這些經典歌曲也許影響了每一個金屬樂迷的生命;當中其狂暴粹仍會在演出結束後纏繞你的心神。然後,你會跟自己說自己是多麼幸運有這樣的耳朵,懂得在數以百計的音樂類型中選擇欣賞金屬音樂。

As the dark falls, the kings arrive. Slayer slowly making their way to the front in the cloud of smoke. Giant crosses hung upside down from above have turned the stage into one inverted graveyard. This is a special night to many Slayer fans because the band is going to play Reign in Blood in full. Though many people’s focus is still on the decease of Jeff Hanneman, founding member and guitarist of Slayer, the audience seem to be quite satisfied with Gary Holt (Exodus) filling in the spot. Revisiting this 1986 classic album in live today gives us an indescribable nostalgic feeling. These revolutionary songs may, perhaps, have influenced every metal fan’s life. The violent spirit unleashed still haunt you hours after the show has ended. And then, you’d tell yourself, how lucky you are to have good ears to appreciate metal music amongst hundreds of genre.

Kasabian – Live in New York City

…Kasabian always appears to be frontman Tom Meighan and guitarist / primary composer Sergio Pizzorno’s solo project. Not only they are frequently featured on magazine cover and conduct interviews on behalf of the whole group, Meighan and Pizzorno truly outshine other members in live performance. Having said that, the rest of Kasabian seem to be comfortable at where they are…

……Kasabian 總是看似主唱 Tom Meighan 和結他手/作曲人 Sergio Pizzorno 的個人樂隊,經常代表整個團隊出現在雜誌封面和接受訪問,在現場演出也確實比其他成員更能展現巨星風采。話雖如此,其餘成員似乎都很安於現狀……

Origin – Live in New York City

……如果用 “殘酷” 來形容 Origin 的整體表現, “傳染性” 似乎是一個更合適的用詞。面對普遍比較安靜和被動的香港觀眾,Origin 成功把半個會埸的人推到瘋狂的 mosh pit 中。在他們的新主唱 Jason 一再鼓勵下,許多人試圖作 stage dive;雖然不是所有人都能 crowd surf 至人群最後方,但其中一個參與者卻表現特出 —- 那就是金長髮的主將 Jason Keyser (下圖)。在 Origin 的特別要求下,我們可愛的香港觀眾呈現充滿暴力和愉悅的 Wall of Death……

…Instead of using “brutal“ to describe Origin’s overall performance, “infectious“ seems to be a more appropriate term. With the generally quiet and passive crowd most bands have in Hong Kong, Origin successfully turned half of the room into one frantic circle pit. Under their new frontman Keyser’s repeated encouragements, many have attempted to stage dive, though not all of them manage to reach the end of the crowd. One of the participant has shown exceptional stage-diving and crowd-surfing skill – the long-blonde rocker Jason Keyser. (Picture below) With Origin’s special request, our lovely Hong Kong crowd present a Wall of Death for violence and pleasure…

Story of the Year – Live in Hong Kong

…Before you’re able to catch your breath, Dan Marsala steps into the crowd again and ask for a body-slamming circle pit. Again, it is another priceless moment to take selfie from 360 degrees.”This is probably not a good idea!” the craziness has clearly scared this tattooed man but he continues “I want a circle pit around me!” The intimacy is beyond anyone has ever imagined. Despite it looks painful to Dan, I think this selfie from Hong Kong is more beautiful than the Oscar one with all the Hollywood stars…

……當你還在喘氣時,Dan Marsala再次步入人群中,甚至要求大家作一次激烈的circle pit。這再次成為另一個360度無價的自拍時刻。「我這可能不是一個好主意!」顯然瘋狂的群眾已經嚇壞了這個紋身樂手,但他繼續說:「我想要一個繞著我跑的circle pit!」這個親密接觸絕對超出了任何觀眾的想像。儘管Dan看來有點痛苦,我覺得這香港的自拍照比奧斯卡那個充滿荷李活明星更漂亮啊……

Orpheus Omega – Live in Hong Kong

…The way they put out the show reminds me of Dark Tranquillity who they toured with this year, though Orpheus have incorporated more physical movement and less of the European vampire elements into their package. Keswick Gallagher is extremely active with his swinging keyboard; while Dan Ralph on bass, who looks a bit like ex-Misfits’ Michale Graves, is giving out intensifying support for the searing guitar overlay from Joao Goncalves and Chris Themelco. I especially appreciate the evenly-shared back-up vocals from all of the members echoing Chris’ growling like a violent musical dialogue…

……Orpheus Omega 讓我想起與他們一同作巡迴演出的 Dark Tranquillity,然而他們除卻了那種歐洲吸血鬼元素,但添加了在台上的活力。Keswick Gallagher 整晚擺動著他的鍵盤,非常活躍;而長相有點像前度 Misfits 主唱 Michale Graves 的 Dan Ralph 帶出強勁的 bassline,與 Joao Goncalves 和 Chris Themelco 灼熱的結他互相重疊。小編特別欣賞所有成員平均地作 back up vocal 與 Chris 的殘聲共鳴,尤如一段暴力的金屬音樂對話…..

Revocation – Live in Hong Kong

…Contrary to the speedy, fury blast, Revocation main man David Davidson stands at ease as the notes shot out like a machine gun. The fluidity generates an irresistible tension to your ears. Yet, it’s even a greater pleasure when looking at his fingers dancing crazily over the fretboard. The extra jazz-fused bridges between songs are the biggest highlight of the night. The ironic contradiction strikes an unexpected momentum that brings me overwhelming joy…

……在迅速、憤怒的爆炸音樂下,主將 David Davidson 擺出輕鬆姿態,然後像機關槍般發射音域甚廣的節奏;流暢的曲調產生不可抗拒的張力,若同時欣賞著 David 的手指在指板上瘋狂舞動,將帶來更大娛樂性。他們在某些歌曲之間加設富爵士音樂感的連接橋樑,產生意想不到的沖擊,那可算是小編心中的最大亮點……

Laibach – Live in Hong Kong

…Indeed, I’d call it as a performance rather than a concert because defining this hot 90-minute show as solely a musical exchange is kind of degradation of the overall quality and what Laibach tried to curate on stage. I will explain my perspectives below…

3. Avant-garde Video — The gloomy, bloody, quirky videos played a big part in the overall performance. The use of logo and signage gave you endless imagination. The repetitive flashing images brought in hallucinated effect to your brain. Monotone torturing clips made your blood ran up to your head. It synchronized with the 20’s German Impressionist moving images artworks. Besides brute and politics, Laibach had showed their great interest in the exploration of space and nothingness..

……事實上,我會視這次演出為 performance 多於 concert;因為將這90分鐘激昂的表演視作為單純的音樂交流絕不能概括 Laibach 嘗試在舞台上展示的訊息,甚至有點不尊重。小編會在下面解釋我們的觀點……

3. 前衛視頻 — 陰暗、血腥,奇異的視頻在整個表演中帶起了很大的作用。Laibach 大量使用標誌帶給你無限的想像空間。重複閃爍的影像令你的腦海產生幻覺。單色的殘酷折磨片段令你毛骨悚然,這與20年代德國的印象派藝術片相接近。除了暴力和政治,Laibach 亦展示了他們對太空和虛無的探索有極大的興趣。

…Peter’s vocal is more husky in live than in his old recordings yet still sounds like a killer. Within expectation, the rundown is undoubtedly smooth with their 30 years live experience. With all the notes already deeply carved into their fingertips, Vader manage to interact with their fans more than other bands normally do. A young man brings along a Polish national flag to celebrate this classic death metal party…

……雖然 Peter 現場聲線比錄音專輯沙啞,但聽起來仍然氣勢萬分。就如預料之內,有近三十年現場經驗的 Vader 帶來的演出是無比流暢的。他們的熟練程度就像每個音符經已深深地刻進他們的指尖,使他們比其他樂隊更能分心與樂迷互動。其中一個年輕觀眾帶來了波蘭國旗,以慶祝這個經典死亡派對……

…If you are uncertain about Mr. Big’s live energy in 2014, we assure you that they still got the power to get you moving. Kicking off with Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy, a.k.a. the famous Electric Drill Song, they put their signature drill trick on display to ignite your inner fire. The fast steering drills drive the chords wilder than any methods could do…

……如果你不確定 Mr. Big 在2014年是否風采依然,我們向你保證,他們的力量仍刻在骨子裡。樂隊以 Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy 打開序幕,歌曲又名 The Electric Drill Song,他們一如既往施展招牌電鑽彈結他的花式燃點觀眾的情緒。快速轉向的鑽頭比任何技巧更能帶出搖滾狂野效果……

Bring Me The Horizon – Live in Hong Kong

……在早前刊登的海外特集中,我們已強調 BMTH 在表演中應用的精彩燈光和投射影像。縱橫交錯的效果形成戲劇性的張力,讓觀眾不知不覺間進入他們音樂的概念世界。Bring Me The Horizon 近年的創作也越見著重這種概念性元素。全晚整體上是一個流暢、緊湊的演出;當中大部分都是 BMTH 近年流行感較重的新曲,如 Go To Hell, For Heaven’s Sake、Can You Feel My Heart、Antivisit 和 Chelsea Smile,其間沒有休息間段。除了禮貌的問候如「Thank you」外,樂隊並沒有太多說話。在 encore 部分,他們以相對平靜的 Sleepwalking 和早期作品 Blessed With A Curse 重返舞台。最後在閃爍金屬碎紙的洗滌下,Bring Me The Horizon 與掛上欣喜笑容的樂迷說再見……

…In our special Overseas Features, We have put a lot of emphasis on the fancy lighting and projection BMTH applied. The superimposition effect induces theatrical tension that pulls you closer to the concept behind their music. This progressive addition of conceptual elements is also reflected in their musical development. The band don’t have much conversation with the crowd except polite greetings like “Thank you”. It is overall a smooth, intense set comprised of memorable BMTH songs such as Go To Hell, For Heaven’s Sake, Can You Feel My Heart, Antivisit and Chelsea Smile with no breaks in between. During the encore session, they return to the stage with calmer tune Sleepwalking and oldie Blessed With A Curse. The night ends with delighted smiles under the wash of shiny metallic shred…

Suicide Silence – Live in Hong Kong

…The group kept their best to fill up the tank to make sure the hype was high. By reaching the second song – Eddie Hermida jumped off the stage and pushed the show to the first peak. Later when he asked for a wall of death, some people surprisingly refused to join probably because they tried to keep their front-row spots. Mr. Hermida had to step down and gave them a lesson of what a wall of death was…Thankfully, towards the end of the show, the crowd became more active. I guess their souls just needed a little more time to warm up. And here comes the greatest surprise of the night (at least for myself). Suicide Silence covered hardcore veterans Hatebreed’s Last Breath. Hatebreed have been one of our favorite acts and we’re thrilled to hear the deathcore-blended tribute from one f the hottest band of the next generation. As far as we know, they’ve only played this live for a few times. Lucky huh Hong Kong!?

……Suicide Silence 不斷使出渾身解數,以確保樂迷情緒高漲。當演奏到第二首歌時,Eddie 突然跳下舞台,與他們近距離接觸。其後 Eddie 叫在埸樂迷來一個萬眾期待的 Wall of Death,幾個觀眾竟拒絕參與,可能想堅守前排位置吧。這也很難怪的,因為可能要等上十年八載才能夠看到 Suicide Silence 的表演。最後 Eddie 黯然下台,親自分開給他們到兩邊,來一個關於 Wall of Death 的課堂…… 當演唱會接近尾聲,人群續漸變得活躍起來。我想是他們的靈魂需要多一點時間來熱身吧。全晚另一個很大的驚喜 (至少對小編來說) ,要數Suicide Silence 重新演繹 hardcore 名團 Hatebreed 的 Last Breath。Hatebreed 一直是我們非常喜愛的樂團,很高興可以聴到新一代樂手融合了 deathcore 特色的致敬版本。據我們所知,他們已經只表演過 Last Breath 幾次。香港樂迷很幸運啊!

Clockenflap 2014 – headlined by Tenacious D, Travis, Flaming Lips, ChthoniC 閃靈, The Vaccines, Mogwai and CHVRCHES

…Since The Umbrella Revolution is the hot topic of the time, audience and even the performers decide to use this moment to express their support through music, or as simple as raising a yellow umbrella…. Music is never about a note or melody, but a matter of social collision all along. Even the song itself might not be intended to be political, like Travis’ Why Does It Always Rain On Me?, the political message evokes in listener’s mind will add another layer of meaning to it.

……由於正值雨傘革命,觀眾甚至一些表演團隊決定利用這機會通過音樂、甚至簡單至舉起黃傘,以示支持…… 音樂不只是一個音符或旋律,而是社會文化的一部份。即使歌曲本身可能沒有任何政治意識,但當在聆聽者心中喚起了政治訊號後,如 Travis 的 Why Does It Always Rain On Me?,樂章便增加了另一層意義。

Rise Against – Live in Chicago

…This homecoming show is filled with all the Rise Against hit songs in the last 15 years. The 2-hour long flashback is set to remind you what the band is about; it includes some unexpected old tunes like Reception Fades off their debut The Unravelling and 2003’s indie hit Like The Angel (from album Revolution Per Minute), plus to their latter anthems Prayer of the Refugee, Audience of One and Satellite. Vigorous mosh pit, insanely-wild crowd surf and thunder-like sing along from the crowd drive the band to perform harder and stronger.

The emotional acoustic session of Hero of War, People Live Here and Swing Life Away get the tiny little bumps over your skins. Some find the calmness moment the perfect time to instagram-ize their concert photos, while some react extremely sentimental. As the traumatic lyrics come off, a lady next to me has her hands covering her face with tears slowly dripping through her fingers. I gave her a hug later saw she screaming every single words of Survive and Savior during the following encore set, the sadness gently pass by…

……Rise Against 選擇以過去15年的所有代表作在這凱旋而歸的晚上作演奏出來。 近兩小時長的表演就像是他們職業生崖的回顧,歌單中包括少有在現場出現、首張專輯 The Unravelling 的 Reception Fades 和2003年獨立樂圈中的名曲 Like The Angel (來自專輯 Revolution Per Minute) ,以對近年熱門歌曲 Prayer of the Refugee, Audience of One 和 Satellite 等。台下瘋狂的mosh pit、一浪接一浪的 crowd surf 和雷鳴般的和唱使 Rise Against 在台上更盡力演出。

Rise Against 第一部分的演出以木結他伴奏清唱出 Hero of War、People Live Here 和 Swing Life Away 作結,令人有雞皮疙瘩之感。雖然有些人利用這個平靜的時間立即把演唱會照片上載到社交媒體,也有些觀眾顯得非常傷感。當 Tim 唱出描述戰爭痛苦的歌詞時,小編身旁一位女觀眾以雙手掩面,淚水慢慢地從指間滴下,那時我只好輕輕搭著她的肩膀。隨著 encore 時她把所有情緒都放在歌曲一字一句的叫喊中,悲傷亦輕輕溜走了……

Heart-Town Festival 山海屯音樂節 headlined by While She Sleeps, Crossfaith, Finch, Issues, Architects

第4章: While She Sleeps – The Hype of Sleepless Energy

總結第二天表演的是以英國 Sheffield 為基地的 While She Sleeps。他們將為您帶你來60分鐘完全喘不過氣來的表演,保證必會在你的音樂日記留下記號。樂團今年進佔 Download Festival 主舞台,反映了他們在當代搖滾圈的接受程度正在擴展。主唱 Loz Taylor 決心以一連串瘋狂行為打動你。屈膝慷慨激昂的尖叫輕易抓住年輕女孩觀眾的心 (也許男孩也如此)。Loz 繼續施展渾身解數確保亳無冷場:跳到觀眾席一同和唱、crowd-surfing、更使出指定動作 –從20尺高的燈架自由跳下。Loz Taylor 以Z形雙膝著地,安全降落在舞台上。精彩的一跳啊!他的同伴 Aaran Mckenzie 也不甘示弱,在喝彩聲中帶著低音結他進入樂迷群。冷酷的旋律結他、預先錄製的鋼琴伴奏、立體聲鼓層和高亢的 clean vocal (加上現場觀眾的伴唱),令演唱會發揮與錄音中同等的戲劇效果。作為一個相對較新、在職業生涯只推出一張 full-length 專輯的樂團來說,生動的現場表演是不可畫缺的,既能填補歌曲選擇的不足,又能豐富整體感觀。 值得一提,演出當日是主唱 Loz Taylor 的生日,主辦即時送上蛋糕,香港觀眾亦一同唱出生日歌為他慶祝。

Wrapping up the second day is the Sheffield-based While She Sleeps, who will take you to the burning fire pit with their 60-minute performance full of breathless moments; and we guarantee it will definitely make a mark in your music diary. Scoring a slot at the Main Stage in this year’s Download Festival reflects their uprising status in the contemporary rock circle. The determination of the tattooed frontman, Loz Taylor, to impress you through a series of outrageous acts is unquestionable. The impassioned screaming with knees down easily strangle all the young girls’ hearts in the crowd (maybe guys’ too.) Loz keeps the ball rolling by falling into the sea of fans, crowd-surfing and needless to say, his signature free-falling jump. Down from a 20 ft-high light stand, Loz Taylor landed safely on stage in a Z-shape during the breakdown. Hell yeah! His peer Aaran Mckenzie tries to gain his cheering by hopping into the crowd. The theatrical melodic guitar, pre-recorded piano, stereophonic drum layer and the sonorous clean vocal (usually accompanied by crowd’s singalong) present equal dramatic effect in concert as in recordings. Having only one full-length album released in their career so far and being a relative new band, a vivid live performance is essential to fill up audience’s attention and enrich the overall perception. It’s worth mentioning it is Loz Taylor’s birthday and our Hong Kong fans get to celebrate with him with some birthday song singalong and a giant cake.
