“We always want to be the biggest that we can possibly be!”
M Shadows, Avenged Sevenfold

After the rumors of heavy metal titans Avenged Sevenfold’s debut concert in Hong Kong began to spread out for more than half a year, A7X finally storms like a hurricane last week with their popular metal tunes at Asia World Arena on 14 January. We have also done an exclusive interview with the band which will be out next week, from their own inspiration to mainstream success, even Babymetal’s cuteness overload!

M: Media
A: Avenged Sevenfold

M: This is the first time you come to Hong Kong. How do you feel

A: Good! We feel relieved. We wander around all these places you don’t know. The view is great. Our hotel is beautiful. A lot to explore.

M: What do you expect the crowd to be?

A: We expect it to be amazing. Most of the fans in this part of the world is completely insane, in a good way. Last night in Korea was good. They were so loud and out of control. We were used to it in Malaysia and Jakarta so we hope for the same. It’s always really great over here.

M: Do you like any bands from Asia?

A (M Shadows): Sure we do.  I always like X-Japan but they don’t come to tour in the States that much.
A (M Shadows): 當然有!

A (Johnny Christ): I don’t know… I like Babymetal. Haha.
A (Johnny Christ): 我不知道……

M: How would you guys describe your music now?

A: Every record is completely different. You know when you were in high school. you’d say “this is that… you like this kind of music…” but as you get older you just don’t really care. We try to make every song to have its own journey, we don’t really have a genre for. There’s some metal in there, some punk, so hardcore, some lame shit as well haha.

M: What do you think as “good music”?

A: What makes you feel emotional – if it taps something, creates a feeling and puts you somewhere else, that comes in all sort of form. you know Elton John, Queen, Metallica, some pop music, whatever you are listening to… To me, if it’s good, it’s good. If it touches you, it touches you.

M: Are the equipments in this Southeast Asia tour different from when you guys tour the west or wherever?

A: I think it’s a little different. You know some stuff is more durable and travels well, sounds good and still maintains the quality. Production-wise it’s really hard to pack up the show like we do in America. We try to bring our video wall and bring our own guy to run it because basically we’re flying everyday and unless you are Iron Maiden who have a 757 (Ed Force One) you can bring all your stuff with you. So it’s like if Metallica was there, they would be sitting here for one day and set up for a few days. We gotta get in and out quicker at this point of our career. So we just try our best. You know the bigger the band, the more you can do. If you get big enough, you can start bringing in more and more stuff with you. Like this time we’re bringing the video stuff and the bigger look, if you’ve seen us last time, we only had the backdrop. We do what we can.

M: So how do you guys decide the setlist?

A: We take a look at whether we’ve been there before or what we played last time, always listen to what fans want to hear and what are popular and try to throw in some hidden jams every now and then. I think it’s really important that we look at every album and try to pick a couple quality songs from each album. We’re playing one of the longest set on this tour.

A (M Shadows): A lot of it is due to crowd reaction – if a song doesn’t translate well then we’ll usually drop it. Right now we have an accumulation of things that it’s like song after song that creates most energy. If you drop a bigger song then most fans will just be upset about it. We try to fit it some random songs that we pick, then the rest will just be bigger songs.

M: Does breaking into mainstream change the band? In terms of creative process or goals?

A: Not at all actually. From day 1, we do what we want to do. We want to write music that we like. Continuously we put out things that we like and hope that our fans will like. And we got the greatest fans in the world that actually can do that. We always want to be the biggest that we can possibly be. And that’s no such thing that mainstream thing came up and all the sudden we change ourselves and like that. So it’s been what we want to do.

M: You’ve archived lots of goals like headlining Download Festival last year. What’re your goals now?

A: We don’t really have goals, some dreams I would say. Like we want to be a big band but  we don’t really know what that meant or what that would take us. There’s different degree of streams. For rock music in America, you can be the biggest rock band but still be in the mainstream, I mean Katy Perry and Rihanna is what mainstream is. If you get down to the technicality, the technical number of it. I mean we are the most played rock band in the country or something last year. But our number is way lower than mainstream (musicians) like Rihanna who got 40 millions plays a week. So that’s mainstream! But I think kids got mislead that a big rock band is mainstream. For us, we just write what we like and do what we want to do. And it works out for us. But we also think we can do video game and stuff and we want people to hear us. We want people to be introduced to rock music because we think they will like it. And there’s always that band that brings you in and they start digging deeper and find all the other stuff. Then they get into European stuff, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC. You always need a band that brings you in and we don’t mind being that band. That we get more people into rock music.

M: So what’s the biggest dream at the moment?

A: I don’t know if I can say it haha.

M: Are there any songs that you’ve played so many times that you can’t stand it?

A: All of them haha. I think all the songs in our career get a bit tiring. But I tell you if the right crowd is there and they get (insane), it makes a whole different. (If) Playing in front of a crowd that’s static, it can get boring to play songs that you’ve played for 15 years. It’s still rewarding to go to China and then we went to Korea and we played the full set that’s really really long but the kids were insane for the whole time and I felt really really good. One of the weird thing that turns out amazing. It’s a vibe thing you know, like anyone will get bored to play Unholy Confession for 5000 times if no one wants to hear it but go to Korea or some of these countries over here it’s like… let’s do this. It’s like a party!
