“We are about having an free mind, not enslaved to any dogma or way of thinking,” says Hundredth.

There’s music that talks about hedonistic pleasure, whilst some take it on a heavier side and choose to disclose the deepest pain in life. South Carolina melodic hardcore outfits Hundredth falls in the latter category. If you have read our introduction published last month, you’d know these guys have done more than just jamming or screaming – the band initiates multiple charitable projects to ensure Indian village people have access to clean water, a basic needs of any human kinds. While the band take a short break from their tight schedule at Warped Tour and talk to us about their latest album FREE and how they ride through darkness.
Dinosaur Journal (DJ): Hundredth
DJ: Hundredth’s music is known for deep spiritual meaning; and hardcore’s core value is always about stay true and stand up for what you believe in. What’s your belief and the core message in your lyrical content?
Hundredth: We are about having an free mind, not enslaved to any dogma or way of thinking, and about an open spirit, not closed off to things above us or others around us.
DJ: Hundredth has initiated numerous charity projects before. When do you decide to take your music a step further in reaching out to the society? And what’s the current charitable project are you planning or working on?
Hundredth: We did that with our record Let Go in 2011. There were some very socially conscious songs on it, so we wanted to reach out and DO something instead of just sing about it. It was incredible. We provided to villages in India with clean water forever. We haven’t done anything since but would love to get another project going sometime soon.
DJ: Congratulation on the release of your new album, FREE. It’s also your first album with Hopeless Records, can you tell us the difference of working with a brand new team in terms of creative process and development?
Hundredth: They are incredible people who work very hard. They believe in us and let us do our thing and they do what they say they are going to do, which is all we can ask for. We love Hopeless. It was a much smoother album release than anything we have done before.
DJ: In our perception, FREE seems to have stronger focus in compositional layering, musical harmonies and balance between clean vocal and scream. Together with the dreamy, pastel color album sleeve, it seems to address the vulnerable side of humanity. So what is the story Hundredth would like to curate via this album?
Hundredth: I just wanted to get a little more personal lyrically, and rather than spill every detail paint a more vague picture. The bands I love like The National and The Cure and The Smiths do this very well so I took some influence from that side. I think it can hit many different people on many different levels.
DJ: Chadwick’s vocal always sounds passionate. It’s like there’re so much to tell and stories waiting to be unfold. Amongst million kinds of emotions, which one inspires you the most? Positive or negative one?
Hundredth: I’d say the fine line between both. A hint of negativity about how shitty things feel or are, but only to get past them and to the other side to feel positive again. It’s the balance that I enjoy.
DJ: Last question – You frequently speak about being lost in life. Many fans have felt related to your expression of such, how do you fight against this bitter feeling and transform it into energy and creativity?
Hundredth: Be around people you love and stay in touch. I think that helps me most. Without the guys in my band around me keeping the vibe nice it could be hard to be on the road. We keep it very chill and calm and humorous. I think laughter breaks the barriers.
