At an OK Go concert, you are going to have everything you want.

On July 24, a rainy summer night, OK Go comes back for their second concert in Hong Kong as musician, dancer, performer, artist, stand-up comedian and media-art curator. Even the band is famous for their low-budget and creative videos, they don’t fail any of us in live shows, where whereas with no prerecorded videos or take two.

Paper Rains

Unlike other concerts where colorful  paper scraps only appeared in the end of the show, OK Go applies it to the maximum. Millions of technicolor scraps are butterflying every three songs. Can’t snap the wonderful scene this time? OK Go will give you another chance! Social medias are flooded by the festival-esque photos if you click #OKGo that night. An instant “after party” is also on with fans having fun on their own with thick layer of paper scraps on the floor.

樂迷:你今晚會在跑步機上跳舞嗎?( Here We Go Again 視頻)
Damian Kulash:

Tim Nordwind:

Q&A Session

Hate it or love it – For some reason, OK Go decides to divide their set into multiple short sections with “Q&A session” in between. If you are a fan, you’d surely love this arrangement when frontman Damian Kulash asked “Does anyone have question for us?”

Fan: Will you dance on the treadmill? (Refer to Here We Go Again video)
Damian Kulash: Nopeeee. This is not a gym!

Fan: What’s the most special place in Hong Kong?
Tim Nordwind: Hollywood Plaza (Diamond Hill, Hong Kong) – the mall I saw from my hotel room – and I’m actually living in Hollywood (California)!

The hilarious conversation evokes the laughters in the stand-up comedy clubs in the Lower East Side – everyone goes home with grin on their face.

Interactive Video Wall

As a tradition of the OK Go concert, interactive video wall is an essential element in their live performance. Except the psychedelic display and moving light beams, the band also introduces their instant video footage recorded from kind of awkward angle onto the screen.

Solo In The Crowd

Frontman Damian Kulash certainly knows how to please his fans – besides the commonly-seen, throw-the-mic-to-the-crowd trick, he also takes an extra step and jumps down to a pre-set mini stage in the centre of the audience and has a short acoustic solo moment. Yes, it’s another “selfie time” for fans and anyone nearby.

Musicianship Showcase

Usually the band’s vocalist will ask you to sing with him, for OK Go, they ask you to make funny sound, such as sneeze and “wow” sound, record it, play it in live, mix the recorded sounds straightway and arrange them into a cappella backbone. It’s a new definition of “singalong”.

OK GO 6

Classic Cover

Although it’s within expectation that the band will possibly cover Led Zeppelin’s Black Dog (at least in their latest North American tour,) we’re still blasted out in excitement when hearing it in live. It discloses another side of OK Go’s facade.

OK GO 11

Kraftwerk

Neon Uniform

Towards the end of the show, OK Go comes out in white suits with moving, neon projections on them. It’s a new media performance which instantly reminds us as a pop-rock version Kraftwerk.

OK GO 10

Full-band Dancing

OK Go choose to wrap up the show with their signature, cranky dance moves appeared in their first viral video “”Million Ways”. The video screen becomes a Japanese temple photo canvas to recreate the glorified scene of the last decade. A wonderful flashback to end the night!

OK GO 3

Compared to other rock concert, OK Go’s is more like an entertainment show. Though the breaks are a little too much (almost every 3 songs,) which sometimes it’s difficult for your mind to transit from one form to another, it’s visually-compelling to enjoy so much within 90 minutes.
