“This is your family tonight!” Chris No.2, Anti-Flag says.

That’s correct. It’s more than a performance – it’s a celebration of nonconformist view and punk rock spirit, with your family and friends in the mosh-pit. This is also an opening ceremony of Hidden Agenda 4.0, which was previously forced down this Summer because of government’s “industrial building revitalization” policy. (See our Special Features for details HERE)  Well, what’s better than using political punk rock songs to make a statement back to the head of power?

In addition to headliner Anti-Flag who are flying from Pittsburg to Hong Kong, the organiser also brings Indonesian punk rockers Joey The Gangster, Taiwanese representatives Accomplices and our local hardcore King Ly Chee on board. KLC kick off the show with their intense hardcore sound; Accomplices then take the torch and share a short talk on the Taiwan / Hong Kong political situations and their anti-communism standpoint.

American Jesus

Joey The Gangster express their amusement to be part of the punk party this night. The crowd react quite vigorously to their set – mosh pit, stage dive, share mic and sing together – you’d see them all during the short 30 minutes. Their performance reaches the peak when Anti-Flag’s Chris No.2 joined in their cover of Bad Religion’s classic “American Jesus” surprisingly.

It’s our 3rd time to see Anti-Flag in live but still the first time in Hong Kong, and we can say this is the BEST AF gig we’ve seen – so intense, so warm. Marking the 10th anniversary of their defining album, For Blood And Empire”, the band decide to play it in its entirety. Every song on the setlist is triumphant anthems and full of memory. Justin Sane & co. showcases what it means by a real punk rock show this night. (The band even called it as their favourite stop in this tour!)

台後掛上 For Blood And Empire 封面的旗幟,觀眾不斷歡呼着 Die For The Government 的歌詞,舞台空間雖小,但樂隊完全沒有受此影響。

The audience welcome the band with cheering and singalong of “Die For The Government.” The stage is small but that doesn’t limit the band from moving around. The flag of “For Blood And Empire” rises and the show officially begins. As expected, the first half set is FBAE’s songs in same order as the tracklist of album. The familiar tunes sounds impeccable in live with the raw energy and stripped-down to expose the core spirit. The unstoppable energy flows from the strings on stage to your bloodstream. Everyone in the crowd, no matter if you are a punk diehard or not, dances on their feet and moves along. The intangible touch to the heart is infectious.

Die For The GovernmentBroken BonesThis Is The End 等。當演唱他們15年最新專輯 American Spring Brandenburg Gate 時,還帶出點點 Dropkick Murphys 歌曲 The Boys Are Back 的團結氛圍。

The second half is filled with their well-known hits like “Die For The Government,” “Broken Bones” and a few newer tunes from their latest (2015) full-length studio records American Spring. When “Brandenburg Gate” is played, it somehow strikes the same vibe as Dropkick Murphys’ homecoming anthem “The Boys Are Back.” The band take a short break from music and take it to the personal level – asking everyone on the floor to shake hand with each others and be friends not strangers. Anti-Flag mentioned in their North American tour that they hoped people from the same community can get to know each others.

While many bands and venues begin to ban the use of selfie sticks, Anti-Flag seem to have no problems with that and even take their fans’ Go-Pro mini-cameras for a close-up shot or turn it to the crowd. Throughout the 90-minute set, they don’t stop anyone from going up for stage-dive; and even join in and dive into the embrace of the furious crowd. Pat Thetic even takes it one step further to bring his kit down for a super-intimate drum solo, followed by Chris No.2 jumping down with his bass to jam together for “Drink Drank Punk” and wrapped up the night with hugs with people on the floors.

This night, music, performer and audience unite together for the re-opening of Hong Kong’s best live house in the name of punk rock. Everyone here, regardless what their favourite genre is, stands in the same room for music. Just as the band says “Thank you for having an open heart and open mind to be here tonight.”
