“Putting this into words hasn’t been easy. When saying farewell, it is hard to know where to start.” Guess this night, we will let music take us all down the memory lane as we say farewell to the pop punk heroes Yellowcard. Summarising 15 years of work into a 100-minute set ain’t easy, the band eventually select 22 songs from 7 albums to share with their Hong Kong fans in live for the one last time.

MakeDamnSure、Sic Transit Gloria… Glory Fades、This Ain’t A Scene, It’s An Arms Race 等,在轉到 The Black Parade 時更引起全場大合唱。

This nostalgic evening begins before the show officially starts. The pre-show playlist features ego / pop punk classics like “MakeDamnSure,” “Sic Transit Gloria…Glory Fades,” “This Ain’t A Scene, It’s An Arms Race,” etc; with “The Black Parade” triggers thunderous singalong. This crowd are certainly emo diehards.

Yellowcard 以首張專輯 Ocean Avenue 內的 Believe、06年的 Lights And Sound 及代表作 Way Away 作開場作品。 「I need you to sing fucking loud!」Ryan Key 叫道。

Yellowcard opens the night with Ocean Avenue hit “Believe” followed by 2006’s “Lights And Sounds” and classic anthem “Way Away.” It takes only 3 songs to take you on the ride back to the 2000s summertime, when you were young and free and jamming the tunes in your bedroom all day. “I need you to sing fucking loud!,” Ryan Key screams. The band keeps running around on stage to make sure fans standing at all spots can see them; violinist Sean Mackin is always the most energetic one. He is still the few musician who manage to do back flip on stage!

Awakening、Light Up The Sky、Rough Landing, Molly、尾二專輯的情感單曲 Lift a Sail 和最近象徵樂團歡送歌的 Rest In Peace。

You say this is a farewell night, we say this is a celebration of 16 years’ laughters and tears. The anthems still give you goose bump, the lyrics still bring you heartaches or on the opposite side, put a smile on your face, and they are still able to pull out all the energy and emotion in live. Besides the debut album hits, this night also recaptures the band’s gradual changes along the way, our favourites include – “Awakening,” “Light Up The Sky,” “Rough Landing, Molly,” second last album’s emotional single “Lift a Sail” and the recent goodbye song “Rest In Peace.”

The band also takes a few short breaks to express their gratefulness of coming back to Hong Kong for their 2nd show before disbanded. Frontman Ryan Key also offers some less-known stories behind the songs as he plays “Sing For Me” acoustically: “This one is for my Aunt, she had been through a really bad battle with cancer… She had a young son and you can’t imagine how hard it is to know you’ll leave your loved one along after you die…” This song was written for his Aunt from her perspective, who was suffering from brain cancer. The crowd is all silent.

Yellowcard have been very consistent in terms of musical style, that makes the whole set sounds like a smooth transition from one era to another instead of feeling like a mixtape of random songs. For sure the audience reacts the most vigorously towards the band’s ‘Ocean Avenue’ anthems, but for diehards on the floor, every track is equally influential to their past. These lines are perfect to end this journey:

// Growing up has just begun,
But there’s a place we can find
Where this pain is useless
And we’ll forever be the young //
Be The Young (2011)
